The Gulf region records some of the highest surface temperatures on earth. A curtain wall in Riyadh or Dubai can reach 70°C or more on the exterior surface during a summer afternoon, then drop 30 degrees overnight. That daily thermal cycling, combined with relentless UV exposure, destroys sealants that were not designed for the environment.

The Middle East Climate Challenge

Sealants installed in GCC countries face a compound stress profile:

  • Extreme heat — surface temperatures regularly exceed 70°C in summer, accelerating polymer degradation
  • Intense UV radiation — near-equatorial sun exposure breaks down organic polymers rapidly
  • Massive thermal cycling — daily swings of 30 to 40°C keep joints in constant movement
  • Sand and dust abrasion — windborne particles erode exposed sealant surfaces over time
  • Low humidity in interior spaces — air-conditioned buildings create a vapour-pressure differential across curtain wall joints

A general-purpose sealant that performs well in Europe or East Asia will show hardening, cracking or adhesion loss within the first two to three years under these conditions.

What to Specify for GCC Projects

For Middle East construction projects, specifiers should demand:

  • High-temperature stability — silicone sealants rated for continuous service at 150°C or higher
  • Superior UV resistance — 100% silicone formulations with proven track records in Gulf climates
  • High movement capability — ±25% or better joint movement accommodation to handle thermal cycling
  • Neutral cure chemistry — non-corrosive to the aluminium frames and coated glass typical of Gulf curtain walls
  • Third-party weatherability testing — type-test reports demonstrating adhesion and cohesion after artificial weathering

Structural Glazing in the Gulf

Structural silicone glazing (SSG) is widely used in Middle East high-rise projects for its sleek, all-glass facades. For SSG applications, the sealant must meet even stricter requirements:

  • Certification to GB 16776, ASTM C1184 or EN 15434
  • Compatibility testing on the actual project substrates (glass, coating, spacer, gasket)
  • Documented adhesion performance after hot-water immersion, UV exposure and thermal cycling
  • Consistent batch-to-batch quality from a manufacturer with certified quality management

DUDI structural grades such as DUDI 9000 and DUDI 9900-3 meet these requirements and are supported by independent type-test reports for export documentation.

Photovoltaic Sealing in Desert Conditions

The Middle East is investing heavily in solar energy, and PV modules in desert environments face the most extreme sealant challenge of all. Junction box seals, frame bonding and module edge sealing must withstand:

  • Cell temperatures exceeding 80°C during operation
  • Daily thermal cycling that exceeds 50°C swing
  • UV radiation at near-maximum intensity
  • Occasional sandstorm impact on exposed surfaces

DUDI photovoltaic sealants (DUDI 1949 and DUDI 1918) are type-tested to GB/T 29595 and designed for these harsh-environment applications.
